Engraving is used to create textures or legible markings on a workpiece. In order to generate fine details, engraving tools necessarily have very sharp tips and cannot be heavily loaded.
In some cases it may be possible and preferable to utilize a regular ball-nose endmill in place of an engraving tool.
Note that engraving tools may be able to also perform chamfering and deburring operations.
